Quickstart

This walkthrough gets you from zero to a working legacy plan in roughly ten minutes. You will create an account, secure your 24-word recovery phrase, enable Life Check, and distribute Social Recovery shards to your trusted contacts.

1. Sign up

Keeplas authentication is passwordless. Open the app, enter your email, and confirm with the one-time code that arrives. You can also link a WhatsApp number for redundant delivery.

There is no master password to choose or remember. Per-device unlock uses a PIN, a biometric, or a passkey — never a password that can leak.

2. Generate your 24-word recovery phrase

On first sign-in, Keeplas generates a 24-word BIP39 recovery phrase in your browser. This phrase is the seed for your master key; everything in your vault is encrypted with keys derived from it.

The server never sees this phrase. Write it down on the recovery card Keeplas prints for you, or transcribe it to paper. Do not store it in a screenshot, a password manager you cannot fully trust, or any cloud service.

3. Add your first items

Open the vault and start with whatever is most fragile in your life today. Common starting points:

  • Credentials — banking, government portals, the family email
  • Documents — passport scans, deeds, wills, insurance policies
  • Health — emergency contacts, medical history, allergies, current prescriptions
  • Instructions — playbooks for whoever has to step in if you cannot

Items are organized into eight categories: personal, financial, legal, health, business, digital, credentials, and messages. Every item is encrypted locally before upload — Keeplas only ever stores ciphertext.

4. Enable Life Check

Life Check is the proof-of-life protocol. Open Settings → Life Check and pick a cadence:

  • Weekly — for Lifetime plans, or anyone who wants a tighter loop
  • Monthly — the default on Free
  • Quarterly — if you prefer minimum overhead

A check-in arrives over WhatsApp and email; one tap or reply confirms you are well. Going off-grid? Enable Travel Mode with an automatic resume date so a trip never triggers a false alarm.

5. Distribute Social Recovery shards

Open Settings → Social Recovery and invite the people you trust most by email or WhatsApp. Keeplas splits your master key into 5 shards using Shamir Secret Sharing; each shard is wrapped with ML-KEM-768 (post-quantum) and sent to a contact.

Pick your threshold — 2-of-5 is the default. Lower thresholds are easier to recover with; higher thresholds resist collusion. Three contacts is the practical minimum to leave any margin for life events.

Below the threshold, shards reveal nothing. Recovery happens on your contacts' devices, never on the server.

6. Record a legacy message (optional)

On the Lifetime plan, you can record encrypted video or audio messages from Vault → Messages. Each message is sealed on your device, addressed to specific recipients, and tied to a trigger — a date, an age, or a legacy event.
