Recovery

A way back, with safeguards.

Plan how to recover access before you need it.

Your options

Choose your recovery path

You can set up one or both methods. It's up to you.

Recovery kit

Optional at setup

Create a secure recovery kit that contains the information needed to recover your account. Keep it somewhere safe, like a personal password manager or a physical safe.

Trusted contacts

Optional at setup

Choose two people you trust. They'll approve your recovery request when needed. Your contacts don't get access to your files and won't be notified unless you start a recovery request.

The process

Contact recovery, step by step

A simple, secure process to help you get back into your account.

  1. 1

    Request recovery

Start a recovery request from the Keeplas sign-in page. We'll notify your trusted contacts.

  2. 2

    Two trusted contacts approve

Both of your trusted contacts approve your request.

  3. 3

    72-hour protection window completes

A 72-hour protection window helps keep your account safe. The window starts when you request recovery.

  4. 4

    Recover access

After both approvals and the 72-hour window, you can regain access to your account.

Both approvals and the protection window are required. The window starts when you request recovery.

Your privacy

Helping you recover does not reveal your files

Your trusted contacts help confirm it's really you. They don't get access to your files, and they won't see what's in your account.

Shared-content permissions

  • Separate from account recovery
  • Only provide access to specific items
  • Show only what you've chosen to share

Keep it safe

Keep your recovery kit somewhere safe

Your recovery kit contains the information needed to recover your account. Store it somewhere only you can access, like a personal password manager or a physical safe. You can create a new kit anytime.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Who can be a trusted contact?

Anyone you trust with a phone number, like a partner, a family member or a close friend. You choose two people, and they don't need a paid plan.

What happens during the 72-hour window?

Your vault stays closed while the window runs. It starts when you request recovery and gives you time to spot and cancel a request you didn't make, from any of your devices.

Will my trusted contacts see my files?

No. Trusted contacts only approve your recovery request. They never get access to your files or see what's in your account.

Can I change my trusted contacts later?

Yes. You can replace or remove a trusted contact at any time from the Recovery center in the app.

Do I need trusted contacts if my cloud backup is on?

The cloud backup is the fastest way back on a new phone. Trusted contacts are your safety net when it can't help: moving between Android and iPhone, a backup you turned off, or a lost Apple or Google account.

Do I need a recovery kit?

No, it's optional. You can create one anytime in Settings › Privacy and security; a new kit replaces the old one. Anyone with its 24 words can open your vault, so keep it offline.

Can I cancel a recovery request?

Yes. If you didn't start the request, open Keeplas on any of your devices and tap It wasn't me before the 72-hour window ends.

What if my trusted contact can't approve?

Both approvals are required. If one of your contacts can't respond, use your cloud backup or your recovery kit instead. Once you're back in, you can choose a new contact.

I lost my phone. Where do I start?

Sign in on a new phone with your number and the WhatsApp code, then restore your vault from iCloud or Google. Our lost or new phone guide covers every case, including a lost number.
